Cancellation of Independence Day Celebration
Posted on Wednesday June 14, 2017
The Independence Day Celebration held on July 4th is cancelled due to the land disturbances to the City Park caused by the ongoing Independence Road construction project. A "Fall Festival" has been scheduled for October 8th to replace this annual event.

The Board of Aldermen felt that it was in the best interest for the safety and welfare of our residents and visitors to cancel this year’s Independence Day Celebration on July 4th. The reason for the cancellation is due to the ongoing construction taking place on Independence Road which has greatly impacted the City Park and our ability to park vehicles onsite. The new date for the “Fall Festival” will tentatively be Sunday, October 8th.

The road project is already past its deadline of April 2nd and the Contractor is being assessed daily liquidated damages, however, to spite this it is not clear whether or not the Contractor will be able to make the revised completion date at the end of June. Even if the Contractor does make the completion date, the disturbed lawn areas where attendees normally park will be recently sodded and driving over these areas may be detrimental.

The City weighed several parking and logistics alternatives such as on-street parking along Independence Rd. and/or utilization of shuttle buses to ferry attendees to and from the event. However, given the numerous variables it was determined the best and safest course of action would be to postpone and reschedule an event for later this fall and have our fireworks display at the end of that event. Look for more updates here on the City website and in the September issue of the Newsletter.
